What is Ning?

Ning is a social networking application. You can use it to find networks of people with whom you share interests. You can also create your own Ning network for use with your classroom or school. Ning will allow educators teaching in grades 7-12 to remove the ads from their networks. (credit: Liz Davis)

How to set up your BASIC Ning in 9 easy steps

  1. Go to Ning.com and sign up for an account.
  2. Name your network and choose an address (most choices can be changed but not the web address).
  3. Enter a description and upload a logo (if you want).
  4. Choose the features you want to start with. Don't panic- you can change this at anytime. Just think about how you want your students to interact: writing stories and commenting in BLOGS, having debates or converstaions in FORUMS and etc.
  5. Choose your color scheme.
  6. Choose public or private. You can change this choice later. I'll explain the pros and cons in the next tutorial, but don't worry about it now.
  7. Choose what questions your students will answer in their profiles.
  8. Click Launch!
  9. You are now up and running. Everything can be altered and changed by using the MANAGE toolbar at the top. Now why don't you invite your students to join you? How: Click here!

What is edmodo?
Edmodo is a private microblogging platform that teachers and students can use to send notes, links, files, alerts, assignments, and events to each other.

How does it work?
Teachers sign up for accounts, and then create groups. Each group has a unique code which is distributed by the teacher to the class. Students then sign up (no email address required) and join the group using the code.

What is the locker?
All users can add any post or reply to their locker. After posts have been added to a user's locker, they can be organized and filtered using tags. Posts can also be sent directly to a user's own locker.
